    Jean Gervaise, dont le nom devint Gervais, est arrivé de Touraine en 1653, avec M. de Maisonneuve. Il reçut du fondateur de Montréal une terre de 30 arpents située sur la rue St-Sulpice actuelle, à peu près à l’endroit où se trouve aujourd’hui l’édifice de la compagnie de papier Rolland. En 1654, quatre mois après son arrivée, Jean Gervaise épousait Anne Archambault, qui auparavant avait été involontairement bigame pendant trois ans. Jean Gervaise est qualifié par Faillon “d’homme grave et sensé”. Il devint l’un des plus important colon de Ville-Marie. Il était aussi boulanger. En 1657, il fut le premier marguillier de l’église Notre-Dame. De 1673 à 1688, il exerça la charge de procureur fiscal, c’est-à-dire de représentant du public auprès des tribunaux. Puis il devint juge de 1674 à 1689.

    Anne came to Canada with her parents in 1646. The following year she married Michel Chauvin, They had a child that died in the cradle.The following year baby Charlotte was born and Anne discovered she married a bigamist.
    Maisonneuve had the marriage annulled, sent Chauvin back to France and assigned the wages formerly paid to him to Charlotte for as long as she remained in the service of the seigneurs.
    Anne married Jean Gervais 3 Feb 1654. Maisonneuve was Godfather to Marguerite the first born of this marriage
